A personal alcohol licence, or personal licence, allows you to sell alcohol on behalf of any business that has a premises licence or a club premises certificate. A premises licensed to sell alcohol must have at least one personal licence holder who assumes responsibility for authorising the sale of alcohol. This would be the designated premises supervisor (DPS).
You don’t need a personal licence to be employed in a pub or a bar and serve alcohol, but the holder of the licence - the DPS - must authorise you to do so.
A personal licence is designed to ensure that anybody running or managing a business that sells or supplies alcohol will do so in a professional fashion. Once you receive your personal licence, you can act as the designated premises supervisor for any business that sells or supplies alcohol.
You need to be at least 18 and have the right to work in the UK to be awarded a personal licence. The qualification you need is the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH). You must not have had a previous personal licence revoked within the last five years, and have no criminal convictions.
After you pass your Level 2 APLH Exam you can apply for your Personal Licence Holder certificate from your local council.
